Like many kids, I was terrified of the dark in my younger years.  I got over that fear a long time ago, but growing up, I had to have a nightlight in my room if I wanted to be able to sleep at night.  I suppose the argument could be made that I still have one if you consider my computers in my bedroom are running all night long and they are filled with blue lights, but lets not get off topic.
