I was able to notice an improvement in my startup soon after I defragged all my drives. (Not with the windows defragger, but with one of the commercial automatic programs tat defrag completlely including all the system files). I would recommend defragging befoe trying out anything drastic to improve performance.

That works good for normal hard drives but for those of us that run SSDs, defragging is a big no no as it shortens the life of the drive and provides little benefit due to how SSDs operate.
